HISTORY: NORMANDY BEACHES

The region of Normandy in the North West of France was the backdrop of one of the most important episodes of World War II: the Normandy Landings or D Day.

In June 1944, over 150,000 Allied troops from Britain, Canada and the United States landed on the Normandy shores, on a scale never seen before.

Today the most important sites and beaches known by code names such as Juno, Gold or Omaha, host important war memorials where history students can see and understand this crucial event that marked the beginning of the end of World War II.

Places such as Utah Beach Landing Museum and Airborne Museum and soldier cemeteries such as Ranville War Cemetery and the Normandy American Cemetery honour the memory of those who lost their lives in Normandy, and serve as a poignant reminder of the horrors of war.

ACTIVE: SCHOOL SKI TRIP TO FRANCE

Whether in the Alps or the Pyrenees, France is home to some of Europe’s most popular winter resorts with hundreds of kms of pistes for skiers of all levels.

French resorts offer a great variety of terrain, delicious food and well established ski schools that have been teaching skills on the slopes for many decades.

At JWT Schools we love the Auron Saint-Etienne-de-Tinée resort in the Alpes Maritimes, which is a traditional mountain town but also one of France’s historic winter resorts with its first lift built in 1937.

In the mornings, the students will get the opportunity to gain confidence on the slopes, taking daily ski lessons with professional instructors; while in the evenings, they can enjoy apes-ski activities and entertainment such as ice skating, karaoke or torchlight downhill skiing.

CHRISTMAS AND EUROPEAN POLITICS IN STRASBOURG

Strasburg, the capital of the Alsace region, is ideal for school groups with an interest in European studies and politics; but also a beautiful historic city with medieval charm and home to one of Europe’s most traditional Christmas Markets.

Located on the border with Germany, Strasbourg’s unique character blends Franco German architecture, traditions and gastronomy beautifully. The Grande Île medieval quarter is a stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site with picturesque cobbled lanes, timber frame houses and canals.

Strasbourg is also a hub of European politics and therefore a great destination for groups looking to learn more about the EU, visiting the Council of Europe headquarters and the official seat of the European Parliament.

From the end of November and the month of December, the scents of mulled wine, ginger bread and other seasonal foods take over Strasbourg’s old town as the city hosts its traditional Christmas Market: Christkindelsmärik.
