Food is a way of life in Galicia, in the North of Spain, and its capital Santiago de Compostela is a real treat for foodies. If you are walking the Camino soon and are looking for some tips and recommendations, here’s where to eat in Santiago de Compostela:
FOOD TIPS
There are many bars and restaurants, ranging from very casual establishments to fine dining and Michelin level.
Many bars around Santiago will offer free ‘pinchos’ with your drink, particularly in the evenings, from around 7pm approximately.
Rúa da Raíña, Rúa Nova and Rúa do Franco are some of the hot spots for pinchos. Casa Tita’s tortilla is one of the most famous in town.
In most of the bars you can also book a table for dinner.
Food timetable is a bit different in Galicia and Spain to other countries. and some kitchens or restaurants in Santiago might not be open before 8pm.
The Abastos Market area in Santiago is a lovely place to explore, both to visit the market, taste the different delicacies from vegetables to cheeses and baked goods; but also to discover exciting fusion restaurants based there, that bring a new contemporary twist to traditional Galician dishes.
WHAT TO EXPECT
When out for pinchos or dinner, expect plenty of seafood and fish options; and seasonal local delicacies both savoury and sweet.
Pementos de Padron (in the Summer season); regional cheeses like Tetilla, Arzua and O Cebreiro; Galician veal (Tenreira Galega); Galician stew (Caldo Gallego), octopus, hake, delicious savoury pies known as empanadas and Tarta de Santiago are some of the most popular.
VEGETARIAN/VEGAN
For vegan and vegetarian options, always check the ingredients list if available or check with the waiter/waitress, as some dishes might sound suitable for vegetarians but might have meat-based stock for instance.
SPECIAL DIETS
If you have special dietary requirements such as Gluten free, always check with the restaurant before ordering or even making a booking.
