Coastal Camino Portugues tours - JWT Camino

Coastal Camino Portugues

Memorable sunsets over the Atlantic Ocean, wonderfully historic cities, long sandy beaches, scrumptious seafood… it is easy to see why the Coastal Camino Portugues route from Porto has become a modern classic for pilgrims.

This is a great alternative Camino de Santiago route swapping the inland tracks of the classic Camino Portugues trail for the scenic shores of the Atlantic Ocean in Northern Portugal.

The Coastal Camino Portugues is a fantastic option favoured by pilgrims looking to experience a less known Camino trail and enjoy walking trails with magnificent coastal scenery. Over 260kms of trail from Porto to Santiago de Compostela you will discover charming seaside towns, sandy beaches, historic monasteries and beautiful countryside.

Before setting off, take some time to explore the bohemian beauty of Porto and its Old Town, built over the hills by the Douro River and a must-see UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In Northern Portugal, you will be following the Atlantic and stopping for the night in lovely coastal villages and towns where to admire the sunset and soak up their history and old world grandeur often linked to the Transatlantic trade of local merchants, such as Povoa de Varzim and Viana do Castelo. From Caminha, you will take the ferry across the Minho River, from Portugal to Galicia.

Once in Galicia, you will reach the Rias Baixas region, famed for its Albarino white wine and scrumptious seafood. From the 12th century Monastery of Oia the Camino continues along the Atlantic into elegant Baiona with its impressive fortress castle. From Redondela the Coastal Camino Portugues route heads inland and joins the classic Camino Portugues on its way to Santiago de Compostela.

As you reach Santiago and its famous Cathedral, savour this special moment as you join in the excitement of fellow pilgrims at Praza do Obradoiro, celebrating the end of this memorable journey. One more thing to do before you go: take a day or two to explore enchanting Santiago de Compostela with its UNESCO listed historic quarter.

You can complete the whole Coastal Camino Portugues route from Porto in just two weeks, or walk from Baiona in one week. Our travel experts can also create an itinerary specially for you.
