South American Cruise & Tour Odyssey Itinerary

Day 1-2: Arrive in Rio de Janeiro

Fly overnight to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s most famous seaside city. On arrival, you will be met and transferred to your hotel where you’ll have the rest of the day to rest, relax and begin your explorations.

Dinner is included.

Day 3: Explore Rio

Tour Rio’s most iconic landmarks. Drive along Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon to the Corcovado where you’ll board the train that takes you up through the tropical forest to the foot of Christ the Redeemer. Enjoy spectacular views of the city below before heading back down to enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant. Relax at the hotel before heading out for dinner.

Day 4: Sugar Loaf Mountain

Soar up to the heady heights of Sugar Loaf Mountain in a glass cable car, getting views of the city, beaches and bays from a different angle. This evening, embark on a Boteco food tour. Botecos are a social hub and an integral part of Brazil’s culinary heritage. On the tour you’ll taste traditional snacks paired with ice cold beer and feel the community spirit they imbue.

Day 5: Travel to Iguazu

Bid farewell to Rio and transfer to the airport for your flight to Foz do Iguaçu. On arrival, head straight into the beautiful nature of Iguazu National Park, which straddles the border between Brazil and Argentina, for your first look at Iguazu Falls. Board a glass elevator down to a viewing platform from where you can get an excellent view of the Garganta do Diabo (Devil’s Throat), the waterfall’s most dramatic cataract. Cross the border into Argentina.

Day 6: More Iguacu

Explore the Argentinian side of the falls today. Wander trails that will give you a closer look at some of the smaller falls as well as getting a fantastic overview of the sheer size, power and magnificence of the falls as a whole. This evening, enjoy ‘The Argentine Experience’, where you’ll learn key phrases in Spanish and the secrets of the country’s cuisine as dine on quintessentially Argentinean food and drink.

Day 7: Fly to Buenos Aires

Fly to Argentina’s enchanting capital, Buenos Aires. Begin exploring as soon as you arrive, your tour includes a ‘tango in the park’ experience, where you can watch couples dancing the tango outdoors in a lush city park.

Day 8: Visit the Pampas

Spend the day just outside the city on the vast, fertile grasslands known as the pampas, on a traditional estancia (ranch). Here you’ll get some insight into the life of a gaucho, and after a typical Argentinian asado lunch, there will be a fun folklore show. This evening, experience the passion of a tango show with dinner.

Day 9: Board the Norwegian Star

Transfer to Buenos Aires’ port and board your NCL cruise ship. The rest of the day is free to explore the ship’s facilities and settle in. Throughout your cruise, when your ship comes into port, there will a range of excursions available to help you explore each destination. These excursions are at your own expense and are bookable on your cruise reservation.

Day 10: Cruise – Montevideo

Capital of Uruguay, the charming city of Montevideo has plenty to explore! Wander the Plaza Independencia, tour a winery, or pop just out of the city to soak up some spectacular landscapes.

Day 11: Cruise – At Sea

Spend the day enjoying the facilities and activities available on the Norwegian Star.

Puerto Madryn is the gateway to Argentine Patagonia; for those who love wildlife (particularly penguins), visiting the Punta Tombo Nature Reserve is a must!

Day 13: Cruise – At Sea

There are so many options to consider on this day at sea like enjoy a show, take a swim, or find a peaceful spot to read a book.

Arrive into Port Stanley, the capital of the remote Falkland Islands. Here, you could explore the quaint town, or head out in search of penguins.

Relax onboard with a day at sea.

Day 16: Cruise – Elephant Island

Off the coast of Antarctica, Elephant Island is home to a population of elephant seals, waddling penguins, rugged mountains and sheets of ice! While you will not disembark the ship today, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to see its magical sights.

Day 17: Cruise – Paradise Bay

Everything you imagined Antarctica to be, Paradise Bay boasts dramatic ice formations, blue-hued glaciers, plenty of penguins and whales gliding through the water! From the ship, hot chocolate in hand, you’ll get a glimpse of the unique and beautifully barren wilderness of Antarctica.

Day 18: At Sea

Bid Antarctica farewell and sail back to more hospitable lands, making use of all the entertainment the ship has to offer.

Day 19: Cruise – Ushuaia

Called the ”End of the World”, Ushuaia is Argentina’s and the world’s southernmost city. Sat on the rugged Tierra del Fuego, there is much spectacular nature to explore on your day here.

Day 20-21: Cruise – At Sea

Continue round the bottom of the South American continent, passing from Argentina into Chilean Patagonia, experiencing the facilities and activities of the Norwegian Star as you cruise.

Day 22: Cruise – Puerto Montt

Arrive in the heart of Chile’s scenic Lake District where you can gaze on the perfect symmetry of Osorno Volcano, visit waterfalls and lakes and find yourself amongst awesome scenery.

Day 23: Cruise – At Sea

A final day at sea to make the most of the Norwegian Star’s many entertainments.

Day 24: Arrive in Santiago

Bid farewell to the Norwegian Star. Met by a guide, you will be transferred to your hotel in Chile’s capital, Santiago.

This afternoon, tour the city and ascend San Cristobal Hill, where you might see the Andes Mountains.

Day 25: Maipo Valley

It was in the Maipo Valley that the first vines in Chile were planted in 1540; well-known for its full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignons, it remains the heart of the country’s wine production today. Enjoy a full day experience in its breathtaking landscapes, with guided tours and wine tasting at two picturesque estates.

Day 26: Fly to Cusco

Transfer to Santiago’s airport and board a flight to Peru, arriving in Cusco, once the heart of the Incan Empire. Travel into the Sacred Valley, pausing the visit the Manos de la Comunida, to watch local artisans working at traditional crafts. Continue to Pisac with its impressive Incan ruins.

Day 27: The Sacred Valley

Spend the day exploring the fascinating sights of the Sacred Valley. Begin at Moray, to view its innovative circular terraces then see the striking Salt Pans of Maras.

This afternoon, wander through the glorious nature of Santuario de Colibríes, spotting hummingbirds as you go then visit Ollantaytambo, a ‘living Incan city’.

Day 28: To Machu Picchu

Transfer to the station to board the Expedition train to Aguas Calientes. This scenic rail journey will take you through the dramatic Andean valleys to the foot of Machu Picchu. Board a bus to ascend to the entrance of this magnificent archaeological site, then take a guided tour to begin to uncover its mysteries.

Day 29: Return to Cusco

Enjoy a morning at leisure in Aguas Calientes, transferring to the train station to take the Vistadome train back to Ollantaytambo, soaking up the immersive Andean views.

Transfer to Cusco.

Day 30: Explore Cusco

Embark on a tour of Cusco, starting high above the city at the fascinating fortress of Sacsayhuaman. Wander among the stalls of San Pedro Market, visit Qoricancha, a temple dedicated to the Incan sun god, and take a guided tour of Cusco Cathedral, built on the foundations on a 15th century Incan palace.

This afternoon is free before a special dinner to celebrate your last night in Cusco.

Day 31: Fly to Lima

Transfer to Cusco airport and board a flight to Lima. Tour the city, visiting the magnificent colonial buildings of the old town, then admire the exhibits of the Larco Museum, where you can learn more about Peru’s epic history.

Day 32: Fly to Ireland

Fly Lima to Ireland, arriving home the same or the following day.
