DAY 1 – CIVITAVECCHIA (ROME), ITALY
Part of the Metropolitan Region of Rome, “Civitavecchia” means “ancient city,” named for its rich history dating back to the Middle Ages and earlier. This city is perfect for those who want to stay local. Civitavecchia offers an abundance of beautiful scenery and warm hospitality. Soak in the healing waters of the nearby Ficoncella Thermal Baths, which use the same turquoise waters where Emperor Trajan bathed centuries ago. Just a few miles from Civitavecchia, these humble thermal baths are perfect for a few calming, rejuvenating hours.
DAY 2 – DAY AT SEA
DAY 3 – VALLETTA, MALTA
Sir Walter Scott famously declared Valletta “a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen”, and the superbly landscaped parks and palaces within its 16th century sandstone fortifications make it clear why. Valetta’s narrow streets are cool and inviting, and St John’s Co-Cathedral is a catholic masterpiece. In the National War Museum you can see the George Cross awarded for Malta’s role in World War II.
DAY 4 – DAY ST SEA
DAY 5 – KOTOR, MONTENEGRO
Nestled deep in an atmospheric and secluded bay, the fortified city of Kotor in Montenegro is steeped in history. Characterized by winding streets and squares its magic and attraction are undeniable. Kotor’s ninth-century walls blend into the mountainside by day, but then bathe in light when night falls. Within these dramatic walls lies a town of mazes of walkways and irresistible charm.
DAY 6 – SPLIT, CROATIA
A vast third-century compound, The Palace of Diocletianis is Split’s main attraction. DAY 7 – ZADAR, CROATIA
Zadar is a historic place, with Roman ruins and medieval churches to explore. Meanwhile, the cosmopolitan cafés and restaurants are great places to relax and enjoy the town’s distinct ambience. Do like the locals do, and perhaps wash down rich, comfort foods like this with a glass of wine. North of Zadar, Kraljevski Vinogradi (vineyard) delivers some beautiful bottles year after year. Or, if you have more of a sweet tooth, perhaps sample the local cherry liqueur – Maraschino – with soda or even just a little ice.
DAY 8 – TRIESTE, ITALY
A little slice of eternal Italy that sits between Slovenia and the Adriatic Coast. Trieste is a charming destination which has been furnished decorously by grandeur and royalty through the centuries. DAY 9 – DALMATIAN COAST SCENIC CRUISING, CROATIA
A scenic cruise of the Dalmatian Coast immerses you in a landscape shaped by Roman, Greek, and Medieval empires. Even without stepping off your ship, there’s so much to see. Picturesque doesn’t even begin to describe this much-admired stretch of the Adriatic Sea.
DAY 10 – DUBROVNIK, CROATIA
Gently cruise into Dubrovnik, a town filled with architectural wonder, crystal clear waters warmed by the Adriatic sea, sun-baked terracotta rooftops, and slender Baroque streets dotted with charming cafes and bars. Not forgetting the opportunity to explore the iconic Old City Walls, which were heavily featured in HBO’s multi-award-winning fantasy series, Game of Thrones.
DAY 11 – MESSINA STRAIT, ITALY (TRANSIT)
Greek legends, migrating wildlife, and the occasional mirage make a journey through the Strait of Messina a uniquely fascinating voyage. DAY 14 – IBIZA, SPAIN
Head south from port to find the impressive Ibiza Cathedral, originally built in the Catalan Gothic style, but with multiple additions over the years. Nearby is the Museu Puget, a 15th-century mansion with an impressive art collection for you to view. If the sun is shining – which is likely – make the most of it with a stroll around the Reina Sofia, or a walk around the historic city walls at Baluard de Sant Jaume. Last but not least, a trip to the island wouldn’t be complete without a beach visit, and Platja de ses Figueretes offers the perfect escape from the busyness of town.
