Belgrade Loop on the Danube River Cruise Itinerary
DAY 1 – Belgrade, Serbia
Belgrade is one of Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, where centuries of history meet a vibrant modern atmosphere. Situated at the meeting point of the Danube and Sava Rivers, Belgrade is home to impressive landmarks including the Kalemegdan Fortress, the magnificent Church of Saint Sava, and the fascinating Nikola Tesla Museum. DAY 2 – Golubac, Donji Milanovac, Iron Gates / Djerdap, Serbia
Golubac is a picturesque riverside town on the banks of the Danube, best known for the magnificent Golubac Fortress. Standing at the entrance to the spectacular Iron Gates Gorge and Đerdap National Park, this medieval stronghold has witnessed centuries of Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, and Hungarian history.
Located in the Veliki Kazan gorge, a section of the famed Iron Gates in Đerdap National Park, is Donji Milanovac, whose peaceful Serbian beauty is breathtaking. So much so, in fact, that filmmakers flock here, earning it the nickname of “Serbian Hollywood”.
One of the Danube’s most breathtaking natural wonders is the dramatic “Iron Gates”. Here, rugged canyon walls soar up to 984 feet (300 meters) above the river, creating a scene like something from a movie. Declared a UNESCO global geopark in 2020, this incredible geological feature separates the Carpathian and Balkan Mountains, forms the border between Serbia and Romania, and is home to Iron Gates Natural Park and Đerdap National Park
DAY 3 – Vidin, Bulgaria
Vidin is a charming Danube town steeped in history, with Roman origins and centuries of Ottoman influence. Wander through its atmospheric Old Town, visit the impressive Baba Vida Fortress, and discover a fascinating mix of Orthodox churches, a synagogue, and Ottoman-era landmarks. Surrounded by scenic vineyards and the banks of the Danube, Vidin offers a wonderful combination of history, culture, and traditional Bulgarian charm.
DAY 4 – Giurgiu, Romania & Rousse, Bulgaria
Giurgiu sits among the mud flats and marshes of the Danube’s left bank. This one-time exporter of timber, grain, salt, and petroleum was served by a railway to Bucharest that was built in 1869, the first line opened in Romania. By 1954, Giurgiu had another feather in its cap, when the steel-truss Friendship Bridge opened over the Danube, connecting Romania to neighboring Bulgaria.
The city of Rousse on the right bank of the Danube grew from a Neolithic settlement into one of modern Bulgaria’s key cultural and economic centers. Its beautiful Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo architecture, wide boulevards, and green squares earned it the nickname “Little Vienna”.
DAY 5 – Rousse & Svistov, Bulgaria
Highlights of Rousse include its beautiful Opera House, Palace of Justice, Freedom Square, and Freedom Bridge, which crosses the Danube to Giurgiu, Romania, and elevated Rousse to Bulgaria’s most significant river port.
You will then get to travel to Svivstov which is a beautiful riverside city on the Danube, renowned for its elegant architecture, rich history, and vibrant cultural heritage. Stroll through the charming Old Town, admire its grand Neo-Baroque buildings, and enjoy the scenic riverfront promenade. Overlooking the city is the impressive Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, while lively cafés, museums, and leafy squares make Ruse one of Bulgaria’s most attractive and welcoming destinations.
DAY 6 – Vidin, Bulgaria
Return to Vidin to further discover the historic Danube town shaped by Roman, Ottoman, and Bulgarian influences. Explore the impressive Baba Vida Fortress, one of Bulgaria’s best-preserved medieval castles, and wander through the atmospheric Old Town with its mix of historic churches, cultural landmarks, and riverside charm. Surrounded by vineyards and beautiful Danube scenery, Vidin offers an authentic glimpse into Bulgaria’s fascinating past.
DAY 7 – Turnu Severin, Romania & Iron Gates / Djerdap, Serbia
Cruise through the spectacular Iron Gates, one of Europe’s most dramatic natural landscapes, where towering cliffs and the winding Danube create unforgettable views. Stop in Drobeta-Turnu Severin, a historic Romanian port city with ancient Roman roots, before exploring the breathtaking Đerdap National Park on the Serbian side of the river. This scenic stretch combines natural beauty, ancient history, and remarkable engineering, including the famous Iron Gates hydroelectric system.
DAY 8 – Belgrade, Serbia
Today is the last stop on your luxury Belgrade Loop on the Danube as you disembark and begin your journey home.
