From its characteristic canals to world class museums and colourful markets, Amsterdam is a city with plenty of character. The Best of Amsterdam School Trip introduces students to the art, architecture and culture of the vibrant Dutch capital.

A city built on water, Amsterdam is crisscrossed by a network of 165 canals and over 1200 bridges. What other way to explore the city than by boat? The Best of Amsterdam School Trip kick starts with a boat cruise navigating the city’s UNESCO listed Canal Ring or Grachtengordel which was designed to facilitate transport and trade during the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century.

Amsterdam’s iconic canals are a national treasure and most of the city’s main attractions can be admired with a unique vantage point from your cruise boat.

During the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands, Jewish teenager Anne Frank and her family went into hiding at the back of a house in Amsterdam. The family would live in what is known as the Secret Annex for over two years, until they were discovered and taken to the Auschwitz concentration camp in 1944. During her time at the Secret Annex, young Anne kept a diary, detailing her life in hiding.

Her diary would be published after the war by surviving dad Otto and become an international bestseller. Since the 1960s, the Anne Frank House Museum where she lived with her family has welcome visitors from all over the world to learn about her life but also about WWII, the Holocaust, antisemitism and prejudice.

Students will feel inspired by the landscapes, portraits, drawings and letters of Vincent Van Gogh at the Van Gogh Museum, dedicated exclusively to the life and work of the beloved Dutch artist. They will also get to admire the masterpieces of the Dutch Masters such as Rembrandt and Vermeer at the Rijksmuseum, dedicated to the arts and history of Amsterdam.
