Camino Ingles

The Camino Ingles route of the Camino de Santiago takes its name after the English, Irish and other northern pilgrims who used to favour this route on their way to Santiago de Compostela. These northern pilgrims would have travelled by boat from places like Dublin, Bristol, Galway or Southampton to the ports of Ferrol or A Coruña where they would continue their journey on foot.

There are records dating back to the 12th century of pilgrims taking this route to ask St James for protection as they continued the pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. The Camino Ingles from Ferrol is the shortest of the Camino de Santiago trails and while the terrain is easy enough and definitely manageable for walkers of all levels, it has a few notorious hills.

Modern day pilgrims can also start either in A Coruña or Ferrol, although the option from Ferrol (120kms) is generally more popular as you will need 100kms on foot to receive your Compostela pilgrim certificate in Santiago de Compostela.

It is also possible to receive a certificate if you walk from the coastal city of A Coruña (75kms) for pilgrims who complete additional pilgrim walks in Ireland or the UK.

There are some wonderful towns along the first half of the route, like Pontedeume and Betanzos, with their beautiful medieval quarters of charming cobbled streets and stunning churches. On the first part of the Camino from Ferrol, pilgrims can also enjoy wonderful coastal views of the Ria de Ferrol and Ria de Ares; and don’t forget to pack your swimming gear, as you will have an opportunity to go for a swim in Praia da Magdalena near Pontedeume and in the village of Miño.

The second half of the Camino Ingles has a more rural character, taking pilgrims through farmland and forest trails before reaching the suburbs of Santiago de Compostela, where you will join pilgrims from all over the world as you celebrate your achievement at the Praza do Obradoiro.

If you are travelling at Easter time, make sure you spend a few days in Ferrol to attend its famous Easter processions, Semana Santa de Ferrol, one of the most impressive in Galicia.
